GST Tax harmonisation closer in Quebec Canada

Officials from Quebec and federal Canadian tax authorities are said to be close to agreement on the terms of the implementation of a harmonised tax regime for the Province.

As present, Quebec operates a federal Goods and Services (GST) tax and Quebec Sales Tax – or Provincial Sales Tax (PST).  Over the course of the past ten years, many other Canadian Provinces have merged these two taxes, to produce a more efficient and easy to administer harmonised sales tax (HST).

Key to any agreement to combining the Provincial and Federal taxes is compensation to Quebec of any lost revenues during transition.  Both British Columbia and Ontario received large payments during their transition.
