The VAT proposal would make Hungary's standard VAT rate the highest in the European Union. It has been a common misconception that all EU member states had to keep their VAT rates within the 15%-25% band. However, the EC has never been able to gain agreement to this - although 15% is the lowest permitted, and only Luxembourg now is at 15%. Click here to check all EU VAT rates
"If Hungary decided to raise its VAT rate to 27%, the Commission would not do anything because there is no legal obligation to be under 25%." said a spokesman for the Commission for Taxation, Customs, Audit and Anti-Fraud this week.
